The American Red Cross goes the extra mile to assist members of the US military

The American Red Cross has a rich history that dates back over 140 years. From its early beginnings, it has been dedicated to lending a helping hand to those in need. One of its first notable partnerships was formed during World War I, where it provided crucial support to United States soldiers on the battlefield. This partnership has since evolved into the Service to the Armed Forces program. As part of this program, the Red Cross takes on the important role of coordinating emergency messages.

Annette Rowland, spokesperson for the Red Cross, emphasized the unique role of their organization in assisting service members who are overseas and facing urgent family situations. She highlighted the Red Cross’ authority to directly communicate with commanding officers and ensure that service members can return home promptly in critical times, such as when a spouse is about to give birth.

According to Annette Rowland from the Red Cross, providing emergency communications is one of the most significant contributions they make to the military. In Alabama alone, they handled over 6,000 such communications last year. However, this is just one of the many services they provide to the military.

Rowland emphasized the significance of reliable communication within the military. She highlighted that the military heavily depends on this aspect as it ensures that crucial messages are not missed or overlooked.

The Red Cross offers various forms of assistance to our brave servicemen and women. For example, Rowland mentions that they provide comfort kits containing essential toiletries to homeless veterans. Additionally, they work together with veterans who require transportation for their appointments and support those transitioning out of the military through yellow ribbon events and resiliency workshops.

Rowland emphasized the importance of helping veterans transfer their skills and experiences from the military to the civilian world while also providing them with effective coping mechanisms.

One way to support veterans in coping with their PTSD is through the use of therapy dogs. These furry companions have proven to be effective in providing comfort and assistance to veterans. The presence of the Red Cross is prominent on local military bases such as NAS Pensacola and Eglin Air Force Base. They offer a range of services including comfort kits, organizing baby showers for new moms, and facilitating a smooth transition for those embarking on their military careers.

The Red Cross is among the first organizations to assist veterans impacted by natural disasters. For instance, just last year, Rowland shared a story about a marine veteran who wished to remain at home following a tornado but had his refrigerator damaged by the storm.

Rowland, expressing her knowledge that the individual in question was a veteran, utilized her connections and resources to ensure that he received the necessary support. By reaching out to members of the armed forces service, she was able to secure a brand-new refrigerator for him within just 48 hours. The positive outcome brought immense joy to the veteran, as it enabled him to continue living comfortably in his own home.

The Red Cross treasures its partnership with the military and eagerly looks forward to providing them with a wide range of services.

“It’s absolutely crucial that we show up and support them because they’ve always had our backs, defending and fighting for us,” expressed Rowland passionately. “Attending is a simple decision that needs no contemplation.”
