Eighteen seaside points along the Jersey Shore are set to receive significant improvements in the coming months. These iconic boardwalks will be allocated millions of dollars to enhance their waterfront areas.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently unveiled a significant development regarding the Boardwalk Preservation Fund. The fund, which is being administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), has allocated a substantial $100 million in grants. The primary objective of these grants is to support the Jersey Shore communities in maintaining their status as thriving tourism destinations. The funding will be utilized to procure cutting-edge materials for boardwalks, enhancing their storm resiliency and promoting the longevity of the infrastructure.
Governor Murphy emphasized the importance of the boardwalks at the Jersey shore, stating that they hold countless memories for families and friends. He acknowledged that these boardwalks have always been a cherished destination and expressed the government’s commitment to assisting shore communities in their efforts to restore and preserve these iconic wooden main streets.
The American Rescue Plan’s Coronavirus State & Local Fiscal Recovery Funds are providing funding for the Boardwalk Preservation Fund. Recipients of the awards in New Jersey must utilize the funds to enhance their existing boardwalks by incorporating new features, conducting maintenance, reconstructing, or repairing structures.
Asbury Park and Atlantic City have been granted the largest amounts of funding under the program, receiving $20 million each for the restoration of their boardwalks. Following closely behind is the collective Wildwoods, with a combined total of $19.4 million in grants. North Wildwood has been awarded $10.2 million, while Wildwood City and Wildwood Crest have received $8.2 million and $1 million, respectively.
The Boardwalk Preservation Fund has also provided significant grants to other notable recipients. Ventnor received a substantial grant of $7.1 million, while Cape May was awarded $6.7 million. Ocean City also benefited from the program with a grant of $4.8 million. Seaside Heights received $4.7 million, Bradley Beach was awarded $4.2 million, and Long Branch received $3.2 million. Additionally, Carteret secured a grant of $2.4 million. These contributions have played a crucial role in preserving and maintaining the boardwalks in these communities.
Under the program, various projects will be undertaken to improve the boardwalk. These projects include replacing old decking with durable materials that have a longer lifespan. Additionally, the program aims to replace outdated infrastructure and enhance accessibility and safety by installing ADA-compliant ramps and railings. Moreover, businesses will be provided with funds to upgrade their facilities in alignment with the boardwalk construction.
The Boardwalk Preservation Fund has given priority to providing funding to shore municipalities that are facing financial difficulties. It is mandatory for the municipalities to allocate the grant funds by the end of 2024 and utilize all the awarded money by the end of 2026.
