HCA to bring hospital food service in-house, leading to contractor layoffs

A significant food services contractor is letting go of its local employees as its long-standing partnership with one of the largest health systems in the region concludes.

HCA has decided to terminate its contract with Sodexo for dining and nutrition services at its Virginia-based hospitals. As part of this change, HCA will now handle these services internally with its own employees.

According to HCA spokeswoman Pryor Green, the transition to in-house dining and nutrition services at HCA’s Virginia hospitals is expected to be completed by the end of April. This move is motivated by the health system’s desire to have greater control over the patient experience. Sodexo, which has been providing these services since October 2017, will be replaced as part of this transition.
