According to representatives from Sinéad O’Connor’s estate, the late Irish singer would be “disgusted, hurt, and insulted” if Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, played her rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U at political rallies.
The singer’s estate pleaded with Trump to “desist from using her music immediately” in a joint statement with her longtime label, Chrysalis Records.
“Throughout her life, it is well known that Sinéad O’Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness, and decency towards her fellow human beings,” according to the statement. “We were outraged to find that Donald Trump has been utilizing her classic performance of Nothing Compares 2 U at political rallies.
The letter went on to state: “It is no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt, and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil.'” As custodians of her heritage, we demand that Donald Trump and his cronies stop utilizing her music immediately.”
Sinéad O’Connor’s estate isn’t the first to criticize Trump’s use of music at political rallies. Artists including Adele, Aerosmith, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Tom Petty, Prince’s Estate, and the Village People have all protested the former Celebrity Apprentice host playing their music.
Earlier this year, The Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr chastised Trump for appropriating his band’s 1984 hit “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” in a post on X.
Marr said: “Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass,” said Marr. “Consider this sh*t shut right down right now.”
