Suspect surrenders after standoff, 3 police officers shot in Washington, DC

Mocobizscene- At approximately 8:30 p.m. EST, authorities confirmed that the man who had barricaded himself in a Washington, D.C. home and shot three police officers has surrendered.

Julius James, a 46-year-old resident of Washington, has been taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police Department. He has been charged with cruelty to animals, as confirmed in a news release. Furthermore, there are pending charges for the assault on the officers, according to the same release.

One officer suffered injuries that were not caused by gunshots, according to the police.

Police Chief Pamela Smith provided an update at 2:40 p.m. EST on February 14, stating that negotiations were still ongoing with the man who had fired at the police earlier in the day while they were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a residence in Southeast D.C.

According to the spokesperson, the subject’s mood fluctuates between being up and down. However, despite these changes, they can still maintain communication with him. The chief mentioned that she and Mayor Muriel Bowser paid a visit to the three officers who were hospitalized as a result of the shooting.

“The officers are in good spirits,” she mentioned, noting that they appeared to be holding up well.

Gunman shot through door as officers were serving arrest warrant, group says

At 1:45 p.m. EST on February 14th, an incident occurred in Southeast D.C. where a man fired shots through the door of a home. This incident took place as officers and members of the Humane Rescue Alliance were in the process of serving an arrest warrant. The animal welfare group has released a statement regarding the incident.

Animal rescue group shares well wishes for injured officers

At 11:30 a.m. EST on February 14th, officials from the Human Rescue Alliance expressed their thoughts and well wishes for the three officers who were taken to a hospital following the shooting on Wednesday morning. In a statement obtained by WUSA, the organization shared their support for the injured officers.

According to officials, the officers were assisting the group in executing an arrest warrant for animal cruelty when an individual began shooting at them. The Human Rescue Alliance reported that their field services director was present at the scene, but fortunately, he was unharmed (WUSA).

“Our heartfelt thoughts go out to our partners at MPD who are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. We sincerely wish them a speedy recovery as they play a crucial role in helping us fulfill our mission. Furthermore, we are deeply concerned for the safety of the officers who are still present at the scene, the community members who are being impacted, and the animals that we were there to safeguard.”

Authorities are urging individuals to stay away from the area while negotiators persist in their efforts to peacefully persuade the armed individual, who fired upon police, to surrender. As of Wednesday morning, the suspect remains barricaded.
