Mocobizscene- A man from Indianapolis received a sixty-year prison sentence after being convicted of murder in the 2022 gunshot death of another man on the near east side of the city.
January saw the conviction of Braven Harris for murder in the death of Payton Wilson, age 23, following a three-day trial.
IMPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of Harlan Street, in the vicinity of Prospect Street and South Keystone Avenue, early on June 30, 2022, in response to allegations of a person having been shot. Wilson was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in the backyard by officers; medics pronounced him dead at the site.
Attending a party, witnesses at the location reported to police that they observed Wilson engaging in conversation with Harris and another male individual in the backyard prior to Wilson’s request that they vacate.
Shots were discharged as the two individuals began to walk away, and Wilson was knocked to the ground, according to a statement from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.Harris had been discussing the incident on social media, stating that he had to “get a new phone” and “leave town” while police searched for him, according to investigators.
“According to witnesses, Wilson was trying to solve an ongoing dispute at the residence and asked Harris and the other man to leave, as it did not involve them,” the prosecutor’s office stated.
“Many of his acquaintances characterized Payton as benevolent and devoted,” a statement by Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears read subsequent to the sentencing. “We express our gratitude for the witness cooperation that ultimately resulted in Payton and his family receiving justice.” Our deepest condolences continue to be with them in this time of difficulty.
