Court appearance scheduled for handler involved in viral video of carriage horse’s death, protest organized

Mocobizscene-The court appearance of the person who was charged with the abuse of carriage horse Ryder more than a year ago is scheduled for Wednesday.

A rally is scheduled outside the Manhattan Criminal Court, where McKeever is making an appearance. The purpose of the rally is to gather support from New York City Council Member Robert Holden, NYCLASS, horse trainers, and other animal rights activists who are concerned about shutting down the horse carriage business.

In August of 2022, a 26-year-old horse named Ryder collapsed on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. Ryder had been working tirelessly for several hours in the scorching 84-degree heat when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Holden stated that it is crucial for us to recognize that in today’s world, particularly in New York City, the sight of horses toiling to pull carriages amidst traffic is no longer acceptable. He firmly believes that this practice is outdated, inhumane, and poses risks to both the horses and the general public. According to Holden, implementing a ban on horse-drawn carriages is an obvious choice that would ensure the well-being of the horses, protect the safety of the public, and also prove beneficial for the workers involved. This would ultimately bring an end to this cruel and outdated industry.

“We appreciate the Manhattan DA’s efforts in bringing Ian McKeever to justice for his cruel mistreatment of Ryder,” expressed Edita Birnkrant, Executive Director of NYCLASS. “Nevertheless, it is imperative that we go beyond this case and put an end to the ongoing torment endured by countless other horses, who are subjected to ten-hour workdays in traffic despite their old age, injuries, and ailments – similar to what Ryder had to endure.”
