Here’s what to expect during the month of August

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – It’s that time of year again, folks: it’s time to look at a new monthly forecast for temperatures and rainfall! The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has released their August outlooks for the United States, and there will be plenty of heat.

While it is hard to anticipate the precise high temperature for each day this month, the overall patterns that are expected to be in place can be looked at. This gives us a basic picture of how temperatures and rain chances will behave throughout the month.

August has a good probability of finishing warmer than normal across the Deep South

And the pattern for this month will favor above-average temperatures. The majority of Alabama faces a 50% to 70% likelihood of concluding August warmer than usual.

With typical highs ranging from 92 to 94 degrees, I expect there will be plenty of days with highs in the mid-90s. Upper 90s are also a good bet, given that August is normally one of the hottest months of the year.

In August, overnight lows typically range between 70 and 72 degrees. Based on the CPC’s general temperature forecast, I’d expect plenty of evenings with low temperatures between 72 and 76 degrees.

August has an equal chance to be either wetter than normal, drier than normal or near normal.

As I always highlight, the outlook should not be interpreted as a precise forecast. There will very certainly be some days that are below average. On the other hand, there may be a few days that are well over average. The only way to know is to wait and see!

The CPC is less certain about rainfall this month. The majority of Alabama has an equal chance of being wetter or drier than typical. That’s what it means when your location isn’t coloured on the map below.
