After a chemical spill, Highway 153 South and Lee Highway were shut down on Wednesday evening. However, they have since been reopened, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department.
On the other hand, 153 North is expected to remain closed for another hour. Marion Environmental is currently handling the cleanup and removal of organic peroxide.
The spill occurred when a FedEx truck was transporting the chemical, and the driver noticed fumes and smoke. He immediately called 911, which initiated the hazmat response.
It was later discovered that the product was leaking due to a hole in the side of the tote, causing it to spill into the back of the tractor-trailer. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed. Organic peroxide is known to produce its own heat when exposed to air, which can lead to a fire.
Earlier reports
