A fatal collision transpired on I-10 in the vicinity of Causeway Boulevard, Metairie, Louisiana, on December 9, 2023, at approximately 11:00 a.m. Troop B of the Louisiana State Police identified the casualty as 34-year-old New Orleans native Brittany M. Delpit. I-10 westbound Delpit was operating a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Delpit experienced a loss of vehicle control while attempting to exit Causeway Boulevard. After colliding with the impact attenuator, her vehicle spun in the westbound lanes of I-10. Simultaneously, a Chevrolet and a 2020 Ford Eldorado minibus carrying seventeen passengers collided in Delpit.
Delpit, who was not secured in a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene after suffering fatal injuries. A number of individuals aboard the minibus received minor injuries and required transportation to a hospital in the vicinity.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the collision, including whether impairment played a role. For analysis, a toxicology sample has been collected. As Louisiana law requires, the Louisiana State Troopers utilized this incident to emphasize the significance of safe driving practices, such as donning a seatbelt.
Troopers reaffirmed that seatbelt noncompliance is the primary preventable cause of death in automobile collisions. Drivers were urged to maintain vigilance, refrain from being distracted, and operate their vehicles responsibly. It was emphasized that the collective dedication to road safety is crucial for the welfare of the community.
