A Mother’s Advice To Her Daughter’s Killer, Who Has Received A 5-Year Sentence: “Get Right With God”

NEW ORLEANS: A New Orleans Criminal Court judge sentenced Ty’Shaunda Riles’s boyfriend, who was shot and died in her home in May 2022, to five years on Wednesday.

The victim’s family was taken aback by the comparatively mild sentence that 20-year-old Shawn May—who was 18 at the time of the deadly shooting—got from Judge Benedict J. Willard.
Hishaunda Riles, the mother of the victim, said, “I’m shocked,” in response to a sentence that carried a maximum 40-year penalty. “However, I must admit that she received some justice. I have faith that God will provide for my needs. I’m doing fine. I’m not that bad.

In court, May turned to the victim’s family and gave a statement in which he called the shooting a “terrible mistake” even though his gun was fired twice. May also pled guilty to manslaughter and obstruction of justice. He went on to allege that he became frightened and left the area, throwing the weapon into a canal.

Then he apologized to the family.

“I hope nothing but the best for him,” Riles said to WWL Louisiana. As I advised him, ‘simply get right with God.’ Make peace with God. All he can do is that.”

May has been incarcerated since May 2022; given the time she has already served, her release date is likely to be in three years.
